STATEMENT FROM FRIENDS OF THE GLOBAL FIGHT AGAINST AIDS, TUBERCULOSIS AND MALARIA ON THE PASSING OF THE ORGANIZATIONS PRESIDENT, JACK VALENTI

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Jack Valenti, President of Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Jack joined the fight against global disease as a final mission in his extraordinary life - a life full of accomplishment - and committed himself to working tirelessly to increase the quality of life for those suffering from the devastating effect of disease and poverty across the globe. He served as a relentless spokesman for disease ravaged communities navigating the halls of congress with statesman like agility to ensure that the United States provided the foreign assistance required to save millions of lives.

In July of 2006, Jack embarked on a five day trip to South Africa. He was eager to bear witness to both the tragic impact of AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as well as to the hope inspired by the efforts of organizations such as The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. While Jack's compassion was always unwavering, this trip accelerated his commitment to fighting these pandemics.

At a time when most would retire, Jack used his last few years to support The Global Fund and to fight for people who live oceans away from us. People, who despite never knowing him, have and will continue to benefit from his selfless work and dedication. The global health community has lost a great advocate and truly great friend. He will be sorely missed and we offer our sincerest condolences to his wife Mary Margaret, children and grandchildren.
