Director of Development

Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, an advocacy organization that works to educate, engage and mobilize American decision-makers in support of the Global Fund and fight to end the worldwide burden of the 3 diseases, seeks an experienced Director of Development for its Washington D.C. office.  Position will be responsible for prospecting, cultivating and soliciting new donors as well as donor stewardship. Specific duties include:

  • securing the annual matching requirements of a 3-year Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant;
  • creating and executing a three year organizational development and fundraising plan including annual milestones, with the goal of raising at least $1.5 million over three years;
  • significantly expanding the organization’s individual donor base, including generating gifts of at least $50,000;
  • identifying and securing new sources of funding;
  • broadening Friends’ fundraising activities by developing new approaches including on-line projects, a membership and planned giving program.

Candidates should have at least seven years of professional development and fundraising experience with at least two years of non-profit experience securing and managing major gifts of $50,000 or more. Candidates must have a strong desire to work in an entrepreneurial and fast-paced environment and have strong oral, written and interpersonal communications skills. She/he must be highly organized and detail-oriented, and be able to manage multiple tasks under very tight deadlines. A familiarity with non-profit advocacy organizations and understanding of global health, including HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria is a plus.

Director of Communications

Duties include:

  • Developing and overseeing implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy for the organization that includes:
    • Core messages
    • Media/press and stakeholder outreach
    • Brand/positioning strategy
    • Web presence
    • Event and publication planning and outreach
  • Liaising closely with the organization’s Policy Department to identify and implement media opportunities for the organization in light of key legislative milestones.
  • Collaborating closely with the Global Fund’s communications team as well as partnering organizations to advocate for and proactively raising awareness about the Fund’s successes in U.S. media.
  • Supporting the development efforts of the organization, including fundraising efforts, speaker’s bureau and positioning the organization with potential donors.

Candidates must have at least 8 years experience, with at least 4 years of policy-oriented communications and media relations experience with a proven track record of media placement.  Candidate must be a highly strategic thinker, have experience formulating and implementing communication strategies and have strong oral, written and interpersonal communications skills. He/She must be highly organized and detail-oriented and be able to manage multiple tasks under very tight deadlines. Hill or Administration experience preferred as is an understanding of global health policy issues.

Office and Accounts Manager

Small, non-profit organization seeks an experienced, part-time (about 25 hours per week) Office and Accounts Manager for its Washington D.C. office. The position is responsible for the organization’s day-to-day financial and administrative management including; payroll coordinator, accounts payable, monthly financial reporting, annual budget, provide support for preparation of tax and information returns. S/he will act as contact person to outside CPA firm to ensure that financial information is accurate and up-to-date in the accounting system. Experience with non-profit accounting rules, grant reporting and donor management is required. Successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director on human resource issues and special projects. Position will include other duties, as assigned. CPA is a plus.

Candidates must have or be:

  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience
  • B.A. in accounting, business or related field
  • Working knowledge and experience with accounting software
  • Proficiency with Excel and Word
  • Experience with independent financial statement audits
  • Experience with, and a thorough understanding of, nonprofit accounting
  • Experience preparing non-profit and other tax and information returns
  • Ability to track due dates for on-time payment of bills
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, and
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.

Policy & Communications Intern

Friends of the Global Fight works to educate, engage, and mobilize U.S. decision-makers in the fight to end the worldwide burden of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. By focusing these efforts on decision-makers in Washington, Friends seeks to build a sustained commitment to supporting the Global Fund and the fight against the three diseases. We are currently seeking hard working, self-starting interns to assist our team. Due to the nature of our small office environment, interns will work directly with all members of the team on substantive projects.

The Policy and Communications Intern will be responsible for working with both the Policy and Communications departments on a variety of projects. In addition, the intern may be assigned a long-term project for the duration of the internship that will culminate in a final presentation to the staff.

For the Policy department, the intern will be tasked with conducting issue related research, drafting fact sheets and results profiles and attending briefings and Congressional hearings. The intern should be familiar with the legislative process, have knowledge of internet research sources, and the ability to multi-task.

For the Communications department, the intern will work closely with the communications team on all media outreach activities; including maintaining our reporter database, event logistics, media material development and Web site development. The communications intern will also be responsible for compiling daily press clippings and should have experience with media search engines (Factiva, Lexis-Nexis, etc.) and general Internet research. Experience in online communications, Web design or multimedia platforms is a plus.

Interns will be responsible for working as a team to maintain our front office operations; including answering phones, coordinating materials for printing and dissemination and other basic administrative tasks as needed. The intern should have an interest in public relations, communications or event planning. A strong interest in international health and foreign policy issues is a plus.
