House Subcommittee Approves Funding for the Global Fund
Thanks to the leadership of Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), on June 30, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs approved $825 million for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. If approved by the full House and Senate, this funding, along with the $300 million requested by President Barack Obama in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies budget would provide a total of $1.125 billion to the Global Fund for fiscal year 2011. The Global Fund’s largest private sector contributor, (PRODUCT)RED, has passed a funding milestone: It has now raised $150 million to support Global Fund HIV/ AIDS programs in Rwanda, Lesotho, Swaziland, Ghana, Zambia and South Africa. With (RED) funding, these countries have served more than 70,000 people with HIV/AIDS - including tens of thousands of HIV-positive pregnant women - as well as invested in prevention among at-risk populations.
