Celebrating U.S. Leadership in Global Health:
20 Years of the Global Fund
19 Years of PEPFAR
Twenty years ago, the Global Fund was born. Last week's social media campaign celebrated twenty years of monumental impact and recognized the critical role of U.S. leadership in the global fight against AIDS, TB and malaria.

Members of Congress including Sen Jerry Moran, Sen. Bob Menendez and Rep. Barbara Lee participated in the campaign, as well as Gayle Smith of the ONE Campaign, USAID Global Health and RED.

The last week of January also marked PEPFAR's 19th anniversary. Major figures including Samantha Power of USAID and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken celebrated U.S. leadership in the global fight against HIV: "Over the past two decades, the United States has invested... to transform the global AIDS response through our support for PEPFAR and as the largest donor to the Global Fund."
Fighting AIDS and COVID-19 Depend on a Firm Foundation (The Hill)
Dr. Angeli Achrekar of PEPFAR and Peter Sands of the Global Fund published a recent op-ed on how 20 years of U.S. investments have transformed the international fight against AIDS and built firm foundations for addressing emerging health threats like COVID-19.
Dr. Tom Frieden: Why I'm Cautiously Optimistic about COVID-19 (CNN)
"The world has a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make the world safer from health threats. The Global Fund, which last week celebrated its 20th anniversary, has made impressive progress against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, and it should play a key role in preventing the next pandemic."– Dr. Tom Frieden
Dr. Nkengasong: There Will Be Another Variant Here’s What We Can Do to Prepare
Dr. John Nkengasong of the Africa C.D.C. (and President Biden's nominee to head PEPFAR) outlines how the world should approach future variants: "the world needs to strengthen virus monitoring and surveillance that can identify emerging variants quickly so that leaders can respond."
UPDATE: The Global Fund's Response to COVID-19
With U.S. and other donor support, the Global Fund’s COVID-19 Response Mechanism is strengthening national COVID-19 responses while protecting life-saving AIDS, TB and malaria programs.
The Philippines received nearly $38 million from the Global Fund's COVID-19 response in 2021 to fight COVID-19 and support COVID-19 mitigation measures for HIV, TB and malaria programs, including telemedicine, mobile clinics and bidirectional testing.
