The Global Fund’s Unique Contribution to Universal Health Coverage

and Stronger Health Systems: A Review of the Evidence and Future Opportunities

Our new issue brief examines how the Global Fund helps countries accelerate progress towards Universal Health Coverage.

Currently, the global community has embarked on an unprecedented effort to achieve Universal Health Coverage — enabling all people to access “the full range of quality health services they need, when and where they need them, without incurring financial hardship.”

While important progress has been made in expanding health service access, an estimated 3.1 billion people — roughly 40% of the world’s population — still lack access to meaningful health coverage.

With its success in fighting AIDS, TB and malaria; its track record of investing in cross-cutting systems; and its unique model emphasizing results, equity and engagement, the Global Fund offers a critical pathway to Universal Health Coverage.

The issue brief looks at 10 areas of the health care system that are crucial to Universal Health Coverage, examines how the Global Fund has provided cross-cutting support in those areas and identifies opportunities for increased impact.
