Friends statement on the U.S. commitment to the Global Fund
Johannesburg, South Africa – Today the U.S. pledged to provide $4.6 billion for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria’s 8th replenishment.
The Global Fund secretariat observed that, “Despite one of the most turbulent geopolitical and economic years in recent memory, partners around the world pledged $11.34 billion to sustain the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, save millions more lives and strengthen systems for health.” Additional pledges from several donors are expected in the coming weeks.
“Friends welcomes the United States’ 8th replenishment commitment to the Global Fund. We also appreciate the new partnership between the United States, the Global Fund and Gilead to make the HIV prevention innovation lenacapavir available at unprecedented speed in partner countries,” said Friends President and CEO Chris Collins.
“As Jeremy Lewin, Senior Official for Foreign Assistance, Humanitarian Affairs and Religious Freedom at the United States Department of State said when announcing the U.S. pledge, other donors must now step up to share the burden,” Collins said.
Collins added, “The U.S. must also keep the commitment it made for the 7th replenishment, for which nearly $2 billion has been appropriated by Congress but not yet sent to the Global Fund.”
“$4.6 billion is a strong pledge for the Global Fund’s 8th replenishment as long as the U.S. also meets its commitment to the 7th replenishment,” Collins said.
“We urge the administration and Congress to ensure that all funding to fight HIV, TB and malaria that has been appropriated by Congress is committed to critical health programs without delay. Transition to greater partner country leadership and self-financing is necessary but should be implemented gradually and responsibly to enable us to meet the targets for AIDS, TB and malaria outlined in the America First Global Health Strategy,” Collins said. “It is essential for the United States to follow through on commitments to help our long-term partner countries and communities scale innovations and achieve viable transitions.”
“We appreciate the administration’s recognition that the Global Fund is a critically important partner in advancing the America First Global Health Strategy,” said Dr. Jeffrey L. Sturchio, Friends’ board chair and past chairman and CEO of Rabin Martin, a global health impact consultancy. “U.S. leadership in the Global Fund partnership over the last 20 years has led to remarkable results, saving 70 million lives. Now we are at a turning point. With continued strong, bipartisan support from Congress, we can finish the job, setting countries up to take more local ownership and end these epidemics for good.”
