Friends Welcomes Mark Dybul as New Global Fund Executive Director
Today the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria appointed Dr. Mark Dybul as its new Executive Director.
“We are thrilled that Dr. Dybul will be returning to the Global Fund to lead the organization during this crucial time,” said Friends President and CEO Chris Collins. “Dr. Dybul’s deep expertise and track record of working with governments, civil society and donors around the world will be vital to navigating this period of transition to increased country leadership, ensuring we maintain progress against the world’s deadliest infectious diseases.”
Dr. Dybul served as Executive Director of the Global Fund from 2013 to 2017 and was a principal architect in the creation and implementation of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) under President George W. Bush, serving as the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator.
He has also served as Professor of Medicine and Faculty Director of the Center for Global Health and Quality at Georgetown University; chair of the Joint United Nations Program on AIDS’ coordinating board and as a member of the board of trustees of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He led President Bush’s International Prevention of Mother and Child HIV initiative at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), was the Co-Executive Secretary of the HHS HIV therapy guidelines for adults and adolescents, and was a member of the writing committee for the World Health Organization’s guidelines on the use of antiretroviral therapy. At HHS, Dr. Dybul also served at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the National Institutes of Health and was the principal investigator in basic and clinical research with a particular emphasis on HIV treatment in Africa.
“The next four years will determine whether transition to increased country leadership succeeds or fails,” noted Dr. Jeffrey L. Sturchio, Friends’ board chair and past chairman and CEO of Rabin Martin, a global health impact consultancy. “Dr. Dybul is the right leader to guide the Global Fund during this complex and pivotal period. We look forward to working with him and congratulate him on his appointment.”
